Before this time the only place a legal cash bet could take place was on course. Bookmakers were allowed telephone clients but this was based on credit. Ladbrokes had this working relationship, not surprisingly, with many punters from the gentry or incredibly wealthy clients. Betting shops allowed punters to place a bet legally. Before, it was was a time of backstreet bookmakers often related to criminals and illegal.<p></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It’s interesting to consider those early years. Reading Ron Pollard’s fascinating book about him working for Ladbrokes as an odds-maker as well as the PR Director these were difficult times. He worked with Ladbrokes from 1962 and remembered how on a number of occasions, in that first decade, they had such liabilities that they were on the verge of bankruptcy. He told of times where they pushed football betting odds to the extreme in what was akin to a price war with William Hill which cost both companies dear. It was madness but that’s how things worked in those formative years. He also detailed how Ladbrokes made a killing by looking for alternative betting mediums such politics and general elections. This proved to be a master move and not only helped gain money but global promotion for the company. One occasions they placed so much hope and money on Labour winning the general election that a loss would have seen the firm the brink of financial disaster. Pollard said he felt so unsettled by the whole situation that he called his mother and said he was contemplating suicide. Thankfully, all was OK.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It is probably too easy to think of giant companies and consider their business history has always followed a straight path and been a bed of roses. In actual fact this is far from the truth. There have been many ups and downs as there will be in the future although it is very unlikely such a company would find itself with serious concern due to diversifying and investing as Ladbrokes did in property, hotels and other businesses across the globe.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I was surprised to read that along the way they invested in managing Aintree to protect the Grand National which was pretty close to disappearing. Also, they purchased Lingfield and many greyhound tracks. They invested in many enterprises which are often forgotten or perhaps viewed less objectively.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It was also interesting to read how Ladbrokes had a brilliant casino business in the 1970s then they encountered problems with The Playboy Club over the acquisition of clients. This was back in the day when rich sheikhs frequented London and literally spent millions in a night. Sadly, the road to riches for both companies fell foul of the law and both casinos lost their licences.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Cyril Stein was one of the movers and shakers in helping create the Ladbrokes we know today and he was a brilliant businessman.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Today Ladbrokes is worth £2.9 billion. It’s a long way from those small beginning when the company was purchased in 1956 for £100,000. Amazingly it was owed £105,000 so in effect the company cost no money to purchase.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Ron Pollards biography is a brilliant read.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-90553052653014027282024-01-16T14:40:00.001+00:002024-01-16T14:40:00.131+00:00Tomorrow Could Be The Best Gambling Day Of Your Life<p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh7OHj2g4iXioE_uVA56YrXi8lplmcvhr-Esz0FzaxU85WRPEv-CCiJjpOr5-ty5ZjP-wk-1GdOfji1IBpHfOzMKVVjeC3PYaV79ZFUGCdMVxkjbF6RjsBQPQexZGCKS2cvhzYRvex3jTeIHm2blZFkyfi1FQkbJwh2xIWgS5jI7pSDveKp-4P0JxCjGU/s640/keywords-2768306_640.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="425" data-original-width="640" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh7OHj2g4iXioE_uVA56YrXi8lplmcvhr-Esz0FzaxU85WRPEv-CCiJjpOr5-ty5ZjP-wk-1GdOfji1IBpHfOzMKVVjeC3PYaV79ZFUGCdMVxkjbF6RjsBQPQexZGCKS2cvhzYRvex3jTeIHm2blZFkyfi1FQkbJwh2xIWgS5jI7pSDveKp-4P0JxCjGU/s320/keywords-2768306_640.png" width="320" /></a></div>I guess we all know it.<p></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Deep in our heart and mind we know it.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">If we ask ourselves the question it slowly reveals itself, a seed of imagination which leads to a secret garden.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">So many of us are stuck inside an invisible cage. We can’t see the bars. The path ahead is clear. We don’t put our ear to it, listening to hear what’s happening on the other side. We don’t dare to kick it open in fear there may be a monster waiting the other side. In truth, the monster is sitting next to us in that comfy chair, both looking ahead without hope.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">A beautiful experience left behind.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It’s a good reason to ask ourselves a question: What would the best day of your life look like? Where would you go? What would you do? What would you think? How would you feel? At the end of that day, as you rest in a different comfy chair, you think about your day.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The day is yours. But it’s not given.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Don’t let this day of days slip by. Make it happen. Run over a practically flat three miles at Kempton Park, traditionally on Boxing Day, the race is now the second most prestigious conditions steeplechase in the British National Hunt calendar, behind only the Cheltenham Gold Cup.<p></p><p>The King George VI Chase has a habit of throwing up multiple winners, with Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Captain Christy, Silver Buck, The Fellow and See More Business just some of the top-class steeplechasers with two victories to their names down the years. Not altogether surprising, winning the race three times, or more, has proved more of an 'ask', even for the best in the business. So far, just three horses have managed to do so.</p><p>The first of them was Wayward Lad, trained, like the aforementioned Silver Buck, by Michael Dickinson and arguably the best chaser never to have won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He did, however, win the festive showpiece two years running, in 1982 and 1983, and after a distant, distressed third in 1984, returned to complete his hat-trick in 1985. Next up was the popular grey Desert Orchid, who won four of the five renewals between 1986 and 1990 and finished second to Nupsala in 1987. Last, but by no means least, came the record-breaking Kauto Star, the fourth highest-rated chaser in the history of Timeform, who contested the King George VI Chase six times and was victorious five times between 2006 and 2011. Following his fifth and final win, jockey Ruby Walsh paraded the 11-year-old in front of the stands, to rapturous applause, before weighing in.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-47268310661639410742023-12-14T14:52:00.000+00:002023-12-14T14:52:00.145+00:00Big Deal: Do You Remember Robbie Box?<p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSWT1JvzmSKmoqHe01eOWoyyehacviMHIyaqJbbtBltGpHsCCNGGZMv_2ZqChj4yZOS8aUwXhHpzRjQfXrOmObCx7aZPyCNY2ZefHSzWw2ypbX2swlV-NJueZcSk7LctmbnrMcoE5fqwoUt8XcvkZscZ3bppwKMX_bN32L1ijLJ8IKBaD5WMQmCiJBcxw/s1000/big_deal_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="680" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSWT1JvzmSKmoqHe01eOWoyyehacviMHIyaqJbbtBltGpHsCCNGGZMv_2ZqChj4yZOS8aUwXhHpzRjQfXrOmObCx7aZPyCNY2ZefHSzWw2ypbX2swlV-NJueZcSk7LctmbnrMcoE5fqwoUt8XcvkZscZ3bppwKMX_bN32L1ijLJ8IKBaD5WMQmCiJBcxw/s320/big_deal_1.jpg" width="218" /></a></div>Back in the 80s there was a real buzz about Big Deal.<p></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I’m sure many gamblers remember this TV program that appeared on our screens from 1984 – 1986 starring Ray Brooks, Sharon Duce and Lisa Geoghan. In fact, it had an excellent cast and a fine production by the BBC.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The theme music was on point, performed by Buck’s Fizz member Bobby G.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It was created by Geoff McQueen and written by David Crane. It was released as a comedy-drama but it really captured the lifestyle of a gambler and Robbie Box was a character many would-be professional gamblers could associate.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I looked forward to watching the three series with my Dad.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The storyline followed the ups and downs of small-time London gambler Robbie Box and his long-suffering girlfriend Jan Oliver.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">His addiction to poker made for an incredible watch.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The three series of 10 episodes each started on the 14th October 1984. I would have been 14-year-old at the time and had aspirations of being a gambler myself and I know Dad would have loved to have given up his business to bet for a living.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Each episode lasted for 50 minutes.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The start, finish and end was something to be savoured and I loved every minute and couldn’t wait for the next instalment.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The last episode in series 3 titled: ‘Innocent, OK’ was a fitting end to a superb drama. Ray Brooks has a long and varied profile as a brilliant actor from the Ken Loach directed Cathy Come Home to the voice of Mr Benn.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I think Big Deal was one of his most enjoyable roles he played, the cast seemed very much like a family.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It was a sad day when the series ended and disappointing that the BBC only released series 1 on DVD (2006).</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Luckily, some kind soul keeps putting all three series on YouTube. The picture quality isn’t great, but when Bobby G starts to sing: ‘Gone are the dreams. You had them so very long. Now you’re having a run…’</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">It’s a good day.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-80160669223714061022023-12-05T14:36:00.006+00:002023-12-05T14:36:00.180+00:00Have you watched Louis Theroux: Gambling In Las Vegas?<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/b-ex8bAnl5U?si=MkjV-4MMC9s09xVl" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"> Even though it dates back to 2007, that episode stuck in my mind for many reasons. It was a surreal experience to see a selection of gamblers basically lose their cash. In fact, ironically, the only person who seemed to win was Louis Theroux. I’m sure you can remember Alan the Canadian high-roller and multi millionaire ‘The Mattress Man’ who couldn’t lose his money fast enough, at one point playing two high-limit slots at the same time. The man who sold mattresses for a living said: ‘I think in a lifetime, everyone’s a loser.’</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Without doubt, The Mattress Man was a bit of a loser. A Whale, as they call big gamblers, and by the end of the program he was feeling blue. In fact, there are online articles which suggest he went through his cash and now a taxi driver.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">But what are high-limit slots?</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">For those, like myself, who have no idea what limit is a high limit. I’m having flashbacks to Louis chatting with Dr Martha Ogman, a retired dentist who lost millions on the slots. She seemed to think it was humorous spending her son’s inheritance and spoke in glowing terms about the casino who paid for her husband’s funeral and wake.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I needed to investigate high-limit slots and learn more.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I headed straight to the YouTube channel Raja Slots, who have 63.4K subscribers. The video titled: $5,000 Spins! Must See High Limit Slots (Over 15 Jackpots). Those words were printed in caps lock but it was too heavy on the eyes.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The video has 251K views.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">If you ever wanted to know how long it takes to lose $250,000 then the video lasts 24:09. I’m not sure who the gentleman is playing the slot but his accent has a southern drawl which reminds me of a character from the Simpson’s cartoon. I can’t remember the name. [Moe from Moe’s Tavern.]</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">I couldn’t help but imagine one of Moe Szylak’s most relatable quotes: ‘Hey Homer. I could hear your pathetic rationalizing through the door.’</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The slot was at the Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The man playing, let’s call him Moe, seemed emotionless and relaxed about gambling such a vast sum of money [$250,000]. It was clearly a stunt to get people watching the video. I questioned if it was real. I couldn’t help but wonder where the money had come from. Whose pocket? The whole situation seemed surreal. In a world where children are starving to death it made for an uneasy watch. I thought, thank the Lord that’s not my money tripping the light fantastic. I had vision of Hunter Thompson’s <i>Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas</i>.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Didn’t he blow his brains out?’</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The man showed a number of $50,000 vouchers which he pushed into the slot to give credits. He started off at a $1,000 a spin to ‘warm it up a little’. Then after ten spins he started on the big money a $5,000 a spin.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Looking at the YouTube transcript it was ‘50 spins at $5,000 a spin’.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Playing the Black Widow slot.</p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br /></p><p align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The money went down much too fast and by the time the $250,000 had been spent the total ‘winnings’ were about $49,000. So, a loss of $201,000 in just under 25-minutes. At a tender age of 19 years and 45 days, Lomu donned the All Blacks jersey for the first time on 26 June 1994, facing off against France. Little did the world know that this young prodigy would go on to leave an indelible mark on the sport and etch his name in the annals of rugby greatness.<p></p><p class="western">Born in Tonga in 1975, Lomu's journey to rugby stardom began when he and his family relocated to New Zealand at the age of 10. His exceptional talents on the rugby field quickly became evident, earning him a spot in the New Zealand under-19 team in 1993, followed by selection for the under-21 team in 1994.</p><p class="western">Lomu's debut for the All Blacks against France in 1994 was nothing short of remarkable. Displaying a blend of power and speed, he scored two awe-inspiring tries, propelling the All Blacks to a resounding 22-8 victory. The world took notice, and Lomu's name echoed through stadiums as he became an overnight sensation. His meteoric rise was further acknowledged when he was crowned the International Rugby Board's Player of the Year in 1995.</p><p class="western">Over the next eight years, Lomu continued to astound audiences with his prowess on the rugby field. He represented the All Blacks in two Rugby World Cups, contributing to their</p><p class="western">historic triumph in 1995. Lomu's impact transcended mere statistics; his immense physicality and unrivalled speed forever changed the way the game was played.</p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-43097534258666255492023-06-09T15:31:00.005+01:002023-07-27T10:57:24.088+01:00Britain's Got Talent 2023: Voting percentages<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I must confess I didn't tune in this year, as to my mind the format is getting a little long in the tooth. thrashing Brighton 4-1 at St. James Park, Newcastle now face a
desperate Leicester side looking for points. The Toon have been one
of the most spoken about teams in English football this year for
various reasons, but another win more or less seals their return to
the top echelons of European football. Can they overcome a Leicester
side fighting for their dignity?

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">While the injuries are
adding up – Jacob Murphy, Joelinton, Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff,
Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krath, and Joe Willock are all out –
Newcastle know they are in good enough form to see this out
regardless. They have built an exciting team that can go and get the
job done; the only question is whether the lack of bench depth might

<h2 class="western">Leicester City News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The Foxes are being
hunted, and they are arriving into this game with some major misses
from their squad. Kelechi Iheanacho will miss out, as will James
Justin and Danny Ward. Other players who look doubtful to get on the
pitch include Caglar Soyuncu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Verdict</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Newcastle win. Despite
Leicester still having some threatening attacking players, they lack
the quality needed defensively to win a tight game. And Newcastle
have enough goals to overcome a shootout with relative ease. Expect a
comfortable home win, and more or less confirmation of UCL football.

this is one of the biggest remaining in the season for both teams.
Formerly a bogy team of Man City, the Citizens now regularly hammer
the Toffees. Everton need points to try and guarantee survival, but
are they likely to get anything at home to the champions elect?<p></p>
<h2 class="western">Everton News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Everton come into this
one off the back of a roaring 5-1 win against Brighton and Hove
Albion. It should be enough to help them stay up, but the Blues are
only a couple of points off being back in the bottom three. They are
going to be without a few important players, too, including Seamus
Coleman who is out for the season and Ben Godfrey who is unlikely to
get back before the end of the year.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Manchester City News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">City are coming into
this one after an engrossing draw in Madrid, and will be sure to rest
players ahead of the return leg at the Eithad. Only Nathan Ake is
ruled out, but expect some rotation given that Guardiola made no
substitutions in Madrid. Rotation should see some squad players come
in, with the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne almost
certain to be rested.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Verdict</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">A tough one for City,
one of their tougher games left given Everton’s need for results,
but we cannot see anything other than an away win. City are on a
10-match winning streak in the league, and show no signs of letting
down as they push for a historic treble to match that of Manchester
United’s 1999 team.

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Inaugurated, as the

in the history of the Liverpool Hurdle, having saddled Pragada

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The result of the

April 9, 2023, last year's runner-up Flooring Porter – who has won
the Stayers' Hurdle for the last two seasons – is an obvious
starting point, while the likes of State Man and Blazing Khan, to
name but two, are promising, young horses whose best days are ahead
of them.

Novices' Hurdle, but sponsored by 'The Potato People' since 2008, the
Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 1 hurdle race run over 2
miles, 7 furlongs and 213 yards on the New Course at Cheltenham in
March. The race was established, as a Grade 2 contest, in 2005, when
the Cheltenham Festival was extended from three to four days, and
promoted to Grade 1 status three years later. Previously, the longest
race for novice hurdlers at the Chelteham Festival was the Ballymore
Novices' Hurdle, a.k.a. the Baring Bingham Novices' Hurdle, over 2
miles and 5 furlongs.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Of course, the Albert
Bartlett Novices' Hurdle is restricted to horses, aged four years and
upwards, who start the season without a win over hurdles.
Consequently, the leading 'bumper' performers from the previous
season – who have demonstrated ability, but remain unexposed over
obstacles – typically feature highly in the early ante-post lists.
The 2023 renewal is scheduled for 2.50pm on Friday, March 17 and the
bookmakers currently bet 10/1 the field; American Mike, trained by
Gordon Elliott, who finished second in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper
at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival, heads the market.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Obviously, no horse can
win the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle more than once, but the most
successful winner, subsequently, was Bobs Worth, trained by Nicky
Henderson. The stoutly bred son of Bob Back justified favouritism in
2011, but returned to the Cheltenham Festival to win the RSA Chase in
2012 and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2013. County Carlow trainer
Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer in the history of the
Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle with three victories, courtesy of

now managed by two of the best coaches in Europe, you would expect
both teams to be flying. That is not the case, though, with Tottenham
looking a tired side sitting in fourth by the skin of their teeth.
Wolves look energetic and aggressive under Julen Lopetegui, but they
do have some crucial issues in scoring goals still. Who comes out on
top here?<p></p>
<h2 class="western">Wolverhampton Wanderers News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">For Wolves, sitting
15th place is a decent position given where the club were
when Bruno Lage was sacked. However, they come into this one with a
big injury list. The likes of Hwang Hee-Chang, Sasa Kalajdzic,
Chiquinho, and now likely Hugo Bueno are all long-term injuries.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Matheus Cunha is likely
to miss out, too, removing another attacking option from the Wolves
managers arsenal. Wolves are light on numbers, creating a forced
consistency in selection that might not benefit them as much as some
would assume.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Tottenham Hotspur News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Spurs are missing a few
players too, with the midfield duo of Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves
Bissouma out for the season most likely. They will also be missing
full-backs in Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal. The latter has been
improved in recent weeks, and his energy will be a miss on the
right-hand side.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Spurs will also need to
make do without Hugo Lloris, who will struggle to come back this
season after injury.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Verdict</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Both teams are in a
tough spot in terms of form, but Spurs do have the firepower of Son
Heung-min and Harry Kane to see them through. Having not lost at
Molineux in some time, too, Spurs will be confident of getting
something from a Wolves team who are just happy not to get relegated
after a toxic summer.

part of the season, more and more teams are beginning to push hard to
get results. This has seen teams that might have expected a
comfortable season – like West Ham – see a slow start catch up to
them. With that in mind, can the Hammers come out the other side of
the relegation zone by defeating a Nottingham Forest side that have
shown impressive mettle in recent weeks?<p></p>
<h2 class="western">West Ham News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Injuries have been a
killer for the Irons this year, and the fact they are likely missing
the quarter of Maxwel Cornet, Kurt Zouma, Jarrod Bowen and record
signing Lucas Paqueta are signs that the injury crisis is not yet
over. Manager David Moyes will have seen reports that this is a
do-or-die game for his reign, despite the lack of obvious
replacements on the market.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">This could see West Ham
set up in a more defensive, counter-attacking style as they look to
play on the youthfulness of Forest.</p>
<h2 class="western">Nottingham Forest News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The Trent side are
going into this game with a massive injury list. Just some of the
names who are set to miss out include Omar Richards, Dean Henderson,
Willy Boly, Scott McKenna, Taiwo Awoniyi, Serge Aurier, and Moussa
Niakhaté. That is a huge number of players to be missing.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Still, they have found
some decent form recently and could arrive at the London Stadium keen
to make a point after some other less than impressive away results.
Forest have stemmed the flow of goals in their games, though, so
could be looking to turn this one into a war of attrition.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Verdict</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">For both teams, not
losing would be a decent result. This could see West Ham set out to
get a point as opposed to go for all three, which is the nature of
Moyes. Forest will come to play, but the sheer volume of players
missing could see them play out a rather tough to watch draw with the
Irons.

Novices' Hurdle is a Grade 2 hurdle race run over 2 miles at Kempton
Park in late February. As the title implies, the race is restricted
to horses aged four years – or, in other words, aged three years at
the start of the current season – who, by definition, are racing in
their first season under National Hunt rules. Inaugurated, as the
Tote Placepot Hurdle, in 1965, the race was elevated to Grade 2 from
Listed status in 1991 and renamed to its current title three years
later.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Despite the obvious
differences between the right-handed, flat hurdles course at Kempton
and the New Course at Cheltenham, which is left-handed, undulating
and features just two flights of hurdles in the final three-quarters
of a mile, the Adonis Juvenile Novices' Hurdle is considered a key
trial for the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The
most recent winner of both races was Zarkandar, trained by Paul
Nicholls, in 2011. Indeed, more recent winners of the Adonis
Juvenile Novices' Hurdle have a less-than-stellar record in the
Triumph Hurdle. Since 2011, eight have attempted the double, but none
of them has troubled the judge at Cheltenham, despite being well
fancied more often than not.

Trial is a Grade 2 hurdle race run over 1 mile, 7 furlongs and 144
yards at Haydock Park in January. Open to horses aged four years and
upwards, the race was inaugurated in 1981, but was elevated to Grade
2 status in 1992. Since 2018, the Champion Hurdle Trial has been
sponsored by online gambling company Unibet and, since 2019, has been
run as The New One Unibet Hurdle in honour of the horse that won four
consecutuve renewals in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Nowadays, the Champion
Hurdle Trial is the penultimate leg in a season-long series of six
races sponsored by Unibet and hence known as the 'Unibet Road to
Cheltenham'. The series starts with the Elite Hurdle, run at
Wincanton in November, and culminates with the Champion Hurdle
itself, run at the Cheltenham Festival in March.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The New One aside,
Nigel Twiston-Davies also saddled Mistinguett (1997) and Ballyandy
(2020) to victory in the Champion Hurdle Trial and is the leading
trainer in the history of the race with six winners. Other notable
winners of the race include Granville Again (1992), Flakey Dove
(1994) and Rooster Booster (2004), all of whom won the Champion
Hurdle – although only the second-named did so in the same year as
her victory at Haydock Park – together with three-time Stayers'

winner Al Eile (2006).

<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">If recent seasons are
anything to go by, the likes of Constitution Hill, Honeysuckle and
State Man, who currently head the ante-post betting market for the
Champion Hurdle are unlikely to run at Haydock. Nevertheless, recent
trends suggest that a likely winner of the Champion Hurdle Trial will
be aged 7 years and upwards, rated 150, or higher, and possess
recent, preferably winning, form.

will be the game for the ages. Morocco become the first side not only
from North Africa, but the entire continent, to make the last four.
Their defensive solidity, though, will be tested against the best
attack in the competition. A defensive miserliness has made Morocco a
nightmare to play against, with clean sheets against elite teams like
Croatia, Belgium, Spain, and Portugal.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">France, the world
champions, are a different prospect entirely It is hard to say where
this one will go, but the defensive solidity of Morocco will be
tested like never before.
</p>
<h2 class="western">France News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Although Aurelien
Tchouameni, with his stunning goal against England to help knock out
the Three Lions, missed training in the build-up to this game he
should be fit for the semi-final. As such France come in with no real
selection dilemmas, and no real problem.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">With Olivier Giroud
finding form at the perfect time and Kylian Mbappe still terrorising
defences, France will be extremely confident coming into this one.
They have nothing to worry about, nothing getting in the way of
selections, and no reason to fear Morocco.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Morocco News</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The Atlas Lions
meanwhile are missing a gluttony of players. Romain Saiss and Nayef
Aguerd, their left-handed defensive pairing, are out barring a
miracle. Walid Cheddira misses out after being sent off in the
Portugal game. Even more worrying, though, is the potential loss of
Noussair Mazraoui. The full-back is expected to miss out, meaning
that three of Morocco’s first choice back five are missing.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">For a talented but
shallow team so focused on defensive zeal, that will be too much. The
fact that Abdelhamid Sabiri might miss out, too, means that Morocco
are down a gluttony of their most important players. Hakim Ziyech
should make it, though, giving them an impetus in attack once again.
</p>
<h2 class="western">Verdict</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">France may well have too
much for the team of the tournament. If Morocco were fully fit then
they might make it, but it looks like they will come up short in the
end-up. The injuries are simply too many, leaving a defensively
focused team with one hole too many to fill-in.</p>

just as they did in UEFA Euro 2016, play Wales in a major tournament.
Having had Scotland in the last Euros and now Wales in this FIFA
World Cup, England are getting used to a little domestic punch-up at
competition level. This game, though, could prove the most
challenging of the group for two reasons. One, they will face Wales
who might already be in a qualification position – and two, they
will be facing Gareth Bale.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Is the LAFC star in his
vintage? Absolutely not. But, as his goal in the MLS Cup Final
showed, he can still do it when it matters. And if you don’t
believe that a passionate Welshman would not love to cap his only
World Cup with a goal against England? Well, what do you believe?</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Wales will be 100% up
for this, and given it is the last game of the group they need to win and for a draw in the Iran vs USA game to make it into the knockout match. It's doable, but approaching longshot territory for both to happen.</p>
<h2 class="western">Who will win this tie?</h2>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Both teams
will be up for this, as much as they were in 2016. Yet while Wales
have regressed to an extent since then, England have improved, but have had recent rocky form.
They crashed out of the 2016 tournament in joke circumstances, but
have since reached at least the Semi Finals of both tournaments
since.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Wales are a good team –
well-structured and capable, and have an immense team spirit. Expect
them to be up for this, but in my view to just fall short.</p>

penultimate day of Royal Ascot 2022, proved eventful, for contrasting
reasons, for two punters who placed through-the-card, seven-fold
accumulators. You may have already read about the unfortunate Bailey
Grant, who missed out on £83,638.75 by cashing out his £1.06
each-way accumulator for just £463.75 after his first four
selections were successful.<p></p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">However, there was
better news for an anonymous William Hill punter. Like Grant, John
Doe correctly selected the first four winners, Meditate, Perfect
Power, Candleford and Inspiral, in his £2.50 each-way accumulator.
Unlike Grant, though, he kept faith in his remaining selections and
gained just reward when Heredia, Changingoftheguard and Latin Lover
all prevailed, making his bet a winner at accumulative odds of
122,889/1; for the record, those are longer odds than for dying in a
skydiving accident or aliens landing on Earth. In any event, for his
modest outlay of £5, the plucky punter received £307,464.02. The
lucky winner was unavailable for comment but, no doubt, felt a sense
of satisfaction that he had held his nerve and prospered in a
situation where others had come unstuck.</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Tony Kenny, Head of
External Communications at William Hill, said, 'Many of our customers
try going through the card at the bigger meetings like Royal Ascot or
Cheltenham, but few manage it. However, one pulled off the incredible
feat of successful choosing all seven winners on the penultimate day
of the Royal Meeting at a frankly ridiculous price of 122,889-1.' In
the words of Mandy Rice-Davies, 'Well, he would, wouldn't he?'</p>

I'm not typically all that into the programme to be honest, but found this year's finalists to be a professional and plucky bunch all giving it their all across the board. It was certainly a hard one to call, and sometimes the running order factors in to an extent, but in any case here are the voting percentage results for the final. Well done to :<p></p><p><br /></p><p>The Final<br />
Axel Blake - 19.7%<br />
Jamie Leahey - 14.7%<br />
Tom Ball - 14.2%<br />
Maxwell Thorpe - 14.0%<br />
Eva Abley - 8.4%<br />
Flintz and T4ylor - 8.3%<br />
Aneeshwar Kunchala - 6.0%<br />
Ben Nickless - 5.7%<br />
Loren Allred - 3.3%<br />
Amber and the Dancing Collies - 3.2%<br />
Five Star Boys - 2.5% </p><p>Many congratulations to worthy winner Axel Blake, and a shout out to the super talented Jamie Leahey too, as he surely has a very bright future!</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-52986654419588225452022-05-13T02:21:00.001+01:002022-05-13T02:21:35.791+01:00Sam Ryder - UK Eurovision - Good luck Spaceman!<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/udsMTb2NIak" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>Who would believe that we'd actually have a good songs as our Eurovision entry for once in 2022. Super talented Sam Ryder has certainly knocked the ball out of the park with this catchy and anthemic song, and social media feedback seems to suggest that many around Europe also view it as a favourite of theirs. In the betting odds, perhaps understandably, Ukraine's entry is odds on (2/5), so the outcome may be drifting towards a foregone conclusion, but the UK entry is currently second favourite (6-1), which is certainly at this stage an achievement in its own right. If we manage to put up a good or decent showing points-wise we can't complain, and it'll certainly made a change from the usual languishing in or near last place. Good luck, Sam!</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3335342750593658506.post-53958240525244348572022-05-06T04:53:00.002+01:002023-07-27T11:04:09.342+01:00Derby 2022 Preview<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>At the time of writing, the Derby,
which is due off at 4.30pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022, is less than
six weeks away. Even so, with the exception of the Sandown Classic
Trial, the traditional Derby trials – 2,000 Guineas, Chester Vase,
Lingfield Derby Trial and Dante Stakes – have yet to be contested,
so there is still plenty of time for the ante-post picture to change,
perhaps dramatically.<p></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Incidentally, the result of the Sandown
Classic Trial had only limited impact on the Derby market, with the
first three home, Westover, Cash and Goldspur, quoted at 25/1, 20/1
and 50/1. respectively, for the Epsom Classic. Luxembourg, trained by
Aidan O'Brien, remains favourite at 3/1, with the Master of
Ballydoyle keen to point out that the Camelot colt, who is
third-favourite for the 2,000 Guineas, looks 'like he's going to be a
middle-distance horse for this year'.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">Of course, O'Brien is the leading
trainer in the history of the Derby, with eight winners since the
turn of the century and also numbers 10/1 co-second favourite, Point
Lonsdale, among his remaining 24 entries at this, still early, stage.
Beyond the Ballydoyle 'battalions', Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby
also holds a strong hand with New London (10/1), Native Trail (12/1)
and Walk Of Stars (14/1) all inside the first half a dozen in the
ante-post betting market.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">The unbeaten Native Trail, who is clear
favourite for the 2,000 Guineas after readily winning the Craven
Stakes at Newmarket in mid-April, on his first attempt over a mile,
is the one with the obvious 'star quality'. However, his sire, Oasis
Dream, was a sprinter and his damsire, Observatory, was a miler, so
his stamina for a mile and a half has to be taken on trust.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;"><br />
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">At much longer odds, Hannibal Barca
(50/1) has 2 lengths to find with Luxembourg on their running in the
Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster last October but, like the
winner, seems sure to be suited by the step up to middle distances,
He was transferred to Joseph O'Brien from Brian Meehan over the
winter and looks a sporting wager against some better-fancied rivals.
